So to end this journey this month I return to the question that I have been asking myself all month "Why do I make beats"?
Music, as an expressive therapy, holds considerable potential for psychological & emotional healing. Specifically, beat production offers a unique therapeutic approach, fostering self-expression, stress relief, & emotional management. This has been my personal experience & emotional journey.
Esteemed psychologist & music therapist, Dr. Elliot Gann, has significantly contributed to the field of therapeutic beat-making. His approach utilizes beat production as a medium for therapeutic growth, helping individuals process emotional trauma, especially among the younger generation. For me, the act of beat-making & DJing often serves as a form of mindfulness practice, anchoring my focus on the present moment, consequently, alleviating stress.
Recognizing the healing potential of beat production, various educational institutions & therapy centres are now incorporating it into their therapeutic programs. These initiatives promote self-esteem, enhance motor skills, & facilitate emotional expression. Furthermore, they encourage participants to share their beats, cultivating a sense of community & connection—essential elements in the healing journey.

Numerous studies affirm the therapeutic value of beat production. It's evident, for instance, in teenagers grappling with emotional challenges who find comfort & expression in the art of beat-making. The recent surge of Drill music or the foundational origins of Hip-Hop is a testament to this. Converting emotional turmoil into rhythmic patterns allows constructive emotional channelling & promotes mental well-being. Research indicates that beat-making stimulates different brain regions, influencing areas tied to emotion, memory, & reward.
Why do I create beats? The reasons are manifold, including some mentioned above. I revel in the process, the creativity, & the journey. Essentially, beat production for many is more than a musical endeavour—it's a powerful therapeutic tool. It fosters emotional expression & alleviates stress. Regardless of your experience level, every beat created not only contributes to a broader musical culture but also facilitates personal growth & healing. So, whether you're an established beat producer or a novice, the art of beat-making serves as an intimate companion in your journey of self-exploration & healing.
