P. Dazey: Soulful Selection

Most DJs are trying to control a room. Keep the floor moving, read the energy, don't lose them. It's crowd management with better lighting. P. Dazey is doing something else. She's trying to heal one.

An intuitive selector working in R&B, soul, funk, afrobeats and global rhythms, she treats a set like a planned emotional journey — not a playlist, a plot. The mission underneath the music is presence: get people out of their heads and into the moment.

Music as therapy

It started as survival, not performance.

"I used to dance, find a song I love, and just move, and it was always therapeutic."

When she learned how sound frequencies actually affect the body, that instinct became intention. Now she curates with the listener's state of mind in mind.

The set as a plot

Her prep isn't a track list. It's deep breaths and a journal. She writes down her intention for the night, folds in whatever she's feeling, and maps the "plot" — the arc she wants to take people through. A beginning, a middle, and somewhere it's trying to land.

Two selves

She works under two names. P. Dazey is the high-energy one — parties, movement, heat on the floor. P. Diwata is slower, experimental, spiritual, built around lyrics and themes like love and healing. Same goal, opposite tempos. The range is the design, not an accident.

Heart over head

Ask how she blends and the answer is almost anti-technical.

"Whatever feels good!"

But under the intuition is discipline. She keeps the fundamentals as a floor and builds the experiments on top. Her rule for it is four words:

"Know the rules, then break the rules."

The harder road

She started at 16, and the early years came with objectification and ulterior motives that made her anxious before she even played. She healed from it, and now she builds the rooms she wished she'd had — women's circles, sacred gatherings, safe spaces to share and grow. Community is the point, not the byproduct. She announced her first pregnancy at the end of a rooftop set at Top Yard, with The Listening Party crowd around her.

With her partner, DJ Mac Mayor, she runs a wedding DJ business — the least glamorous, most human room there is.

"When they express how happy they are with their music, I know I have served my purpose."

Her advice to the women coming up carries the whole philosophy:

"Play around, shine your light, and don't ever dim it! You'll always attract what you put out into the world."

She wants people to leave feeling high on life. Not hyped. Lifted. There's a difference, and the whole practice is built on it.
